Need a little help prepping for your next engineering exam? NautiNote may be able to help. Created by former yacht engineer Ken Sinclair, who also owns Mariner’s Log, NautiNote offers physical flashcards and a mobile app with AI-enhanced learning features for engineers studying for the Small Vessel route.
“The aim is to make studying easier and more accessible, whenever and wherever they are,” Sinclair said. “Whether on board, at home, between shifts, or traveling, NautiNote helps engineers build knowledge gradually instead of trying to cram everything into the final few days before an exam.” The app offers daily, customized quizzes and feedback based on identified weaknesses, making learning more targeted over time.
This idea was born from Sinclair’s own experience. “I quickly realized that the Y-course, now the Small Vessel route, assumes a certain level of study and preparation before students arrive,” he said. This was not always possible for busy engineers. “This often leaves engineers underprepared and, in some cases, stuck in a cycle of resits, costing them thousands of euros and slowing down their career progression.”
He wanted to make exam prep more practical and accessible and to make consistent study easier. “Instead of relying on last-minute cramming, NautiNote helps engineers build a habit of continuous learning, which leads to better understanding, better exam preparation, and ultimately better engineers,” he said.
The NautiNote mobile app sells qualification bundles, including EOOW and Chief Engineer, for €29 per month or €199 per year. The flashcards are sold by subject, starting from €35, with discounts available for bundles. They are also preparing to release new deck modules soon.
