The Canada Sail Grand Prix delivered exciting racing in Halifax over the weekend, with 13 teams competing in the latest event of the SailGP championship.
Spain’s Los Gallos secured their first victory of the 2026 season, winning the four-boat final in a come-from-behind performance and ending Bonds Flying Roos’ bid for a record fifth consecutive event win.
“It feels amazing, and the team has really good momentum,” said Spanish driver Diego Botín. “Every decision, every race we’ve been able to sail, we’ve been on the podium. We need this confidence going forward, and we’re improving all the time. It’s been a long time coming. The risk was high, but it paid off. It means everything to us.”
The weekend was not without drama. Emirates Great Britain damaged its wing during warm-ups and was forced to withdraw from racing, while Mubadala Brazil sustained damage in Race 5 after striking a leeward gate mark, resulting in a four-point penalty.
Los Gallos topped the Halifax event standings with 10 points, followed by Artemis Racing on 9 points and Explorer Journeys Switzerland on 8.
In the overall 2026 championship standings, Bonds Flying Roos remain in first place with 62 points. Los Gallos and Emirates Great Britain are tied for second on 44 points, while the United States sits fourth with 41 points.
The SailGP championship continues July 25–26 with the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.
